Expedition with the Nepal Mountaineering Association

Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is a non-governmental, non- profit and non-political organizational group in Nepal. The association was established on November 1, 1973. They work as a national alpine association that is responsible to promote mountain tourism, climbing sports, provides protection for mountaineers and as well as protects the mountain people, environment and its culture and heritage.

Because of their objectives, principles, passion and hard work, the association is known to be the only alpine association  who has given the authorization by the Nepal government to issue  climbing permits for 33 mountains located in Nepal. The peaks were categorized into two groups, Group A and Group B.

There are fee structures for Nepal Mountaineering Association peaks. As for Group A, which consists of 1-7 members, the fee would be $500 USD and there would be an additional $100 USD for each additional climber up to 12 persons. Group B on the other hand, for 1-4 climbers, it would be $350 USD with an additional of $40 USD for every person in addition up to 8 people. There is as well a garbage deposit fee of $250 USD.

Issuance of the NMA permits is essential to climbing the NMA peaks legally. Thus, if there is an illegal climbing activity done on the NMA peaks, the person can face prosecution under the laws and regulation of Nepal Tourism Act – 2035 B.S. Article No. 38 governing mountaineering regulation. Since NMA doesn’t issue direct permits, climbers have to coordinate with local mountaineering or trekking agencies which are associate members of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. The association made mountaineering popular not only among the Nepalese people but all over the world. Because of the various activities that were conducted to promote Nepal peaks, it resulted to public awareness and interest to climb and enjoy the mountaineering experience in Nepalese mountains.

NMA do not just provide support for trained and professional climbers with regards to new techniques for climbers’ safety and protection but also ensures that as they promote mountain tourism, protection has been provided to the beautiful environment, natural beauty of the Nepal Mountains and preserve the local mountain people together with their cultural heritage. They as well coordinate with regional and international associations in promoting mountaineering activities available to all people all over the world.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association consist an advisory committee which includes one chief advisor and six advisors. They do have elections every three years to elect a Central Executive Board officials and members of the team which includes a president, vice-presidents, general secretaries, treasurer, members with specific assigned tasks and the like.

The group assigned specific committees to handle specific task like the Environment Conservation Committee tasked to conserve mountaineering environment, Welfare Committee which is task to give support and assistance to those mountaineers who experience tragedies in the Nepal mountains, Training and Mountaineering Committee is responsible to provide training for climbers, Mountaineering Rescue Committee is responsible for the safety of climbers, Publication and Publicity Committee, International Mountaineers Memorial Park Committee, Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee and Chapter Coordination Committee.

The Chapter Coordination Committee has an exciting task, which is to coordinate and monitor the specific activities of the chapters such as fund raising (gears and equipments for rent), artefacts collection, Annapurna, local development, sports climbing, public relation and casual program implementation.

To become a part of the team there are as well requirements that you need to comply just like other association a person may be a part of. One of the said qualifiers would be summiteers who had reach Everest or the 8,000 meters Nepal peaks for two times and any Nepalese individual or citizen who is interested in mountaineering. There are as well corresponding fees associated such as royalty fees of 33 peaks, general/ associate/institutional member’s fee, book holder member’s ID fee, and ticket sales for IMM and miscellaneous.

Annual general meeting held once a year as well, to participate and be informed of the policies, budgets, programs and audits. I am hopeful that the Nepal Mountaineering Association will continue to develop alpinism in Nepal and promote safe mountaineering activities to younger generations.

Anyone who is eager for an unequaled and unforgettable adventure must try Nepal mountaineering. Nepal is one of the most breathtaking destinations for trekking, hiking and mountaineering in the Himalayas. Hiking and climbing in the rough mountain ranges and terrains of this country is one of the most tedious and exhilarating outdoor adventures this country has to offer.

Nepal offers a wide selection of mountains that differ in height and level of difficulty. Some of these mountains can be trekked by amateur or novice climbers but some are well-suited for expert mountaineers. Travelers feel welcomed and generally amazed with the vast glorious peaks, remarkable cultural heritage, and forthcoming hospitality of its people.

Before you start packing your things and travelling to Nepal, it is best to know before-hand some important factors that will help you have a memorable and worthwhile expedition. First, try to determine which among the numerous peaks of Nepal you want to reach. There are around one hundred fifty-three peaks in the Himalayas that are open to mountaineers.

It would also help to know what level you are in mountaineering. If you have not had any experience then you might want to start with less tedious expeditions. Some of the easy peaks to conquer for amateur and less experienced climbers are the Chuli Far East and Pisang. These peaks still fulfill many inexperienced climber’s dream of reaching the Himalayan summit.

Later on, after years of experience and practice in higher altitudes, you can increase the level of difficulty to accomplish a much more challenging feat. A few summits that offer moderate level of complexity include Hiunchuli and Singu Chuli, famously called Fluted Peak. As you continuously improve and progress into more advanced mountaineering levels, you can go on a quest to tackle more arduous trails and treks in the Himalayan.

Second, you need to familiarize yourself with the various seasons that are great for mountaineering, and then choose which season you will go on your trip. There are typically four seasons existing in Nepal. Spring runs from the month of March to May, summer is from June to August, autumn is during the months of September through November and winter runs from December until February.

Third, just like shopping online, you may want to try checking on the Internet for several mountaineering companies that will guide you, as well as, help you prepare other required documents including permits and so forth. More often than not, mountaineering companies offer really interesting packages that will suit anyone’s choice.

Permits are required before mountaineers are allowed to go on their expedition. You can research online about the documents needed or simply ask the company you have signed up with.

Fourth, there are royalty climbing fees ranging from USD $1,000 to USD $10,000 for a group of seven persons depending on the altitude. Often times, the higher the altitude of the peak you want to surmount, the more expensive the fees get. There are also additional charges included if the group exceeds seven people.

Planning your excursion in Nepal may seem a little daunting at first, but after following the steps indicated on this article, you will be able to plan better and feel more confident in pursuing your journey. Nepal mountaineering will help fulfill your dreams of reaching various peaks in the Himalayan region.
